Hello, dear reader. One of the first things I did when I started this blog was to compile a list of all my plants and their binomial Latin names. (1)
With that said, I present to you,

1. Rarely will I refer to a plant by its common name, because it's a horribly confusing and arbitrary naming system. A plant can have several different common names, or worse yet, the same name can refer to multiple different species of plant! To eliminate ambiguity, I use the genus and species name. Besides, it's a good practice to know which genus a plant belongs to (or even higher classifications) because that gives you a wealth of information about its characteristics and what other species it's related to. There are some genus' of succulent (Haworthia, Echeveria, just to name a few) with dozens of very species that can look wildly different or barely distinguishable from each other.
2. When I write "sp.", this means that I know the genus to which the plant belongs, but I'm not sure of the exact species.

3. Lemon is notated as Citrus x limon because lemons are a citrus hybrid; the 'x' in a species name indicates a hybrid.
4. In the case of Dracaena deremensis, the plant I have is of the cultivar 'Janet Craig', so I've included that as well
